Emergency plumbing: the first ten minutes matter most

Most of the damage from a plumbing failure happens while people are looking for the valve. This page is written to be read before you need it — and to be usable quickly if you are reading it right now.

Design concept

If water is running now

  1. 1. Shut the nearest valve. The angle stop under the sink or behind the toilet if the failure is at a fixture; otherwise the main valve for the property.
  2. 2. Open a low faucet. This drains the pressure left in the lines so the failure point stops discharging sooner.
  3. 3. Deal with electricity from a dry position. Switch off circuits serving the wet area at the breaker. Never wade through standing water to reach a panel.
  4. 4. Contain and lift. Move rugs, furniture legs, boxes, and anything absorbent out of the water before it wicks upward.
  5. 5. Photograph everything. Wide shots and close ups, before cleanup, with the date intact.

Nothing on this page dispatches anyone automatically. Shut the water off first, then call (954) 708-6930.

Preparation

Three things worth doing on a calm day

Every one of these is easier now than during a failure, and they change how bad the failure gets.

  1. Find and test the main shutoff

Locate it, confirm it turns, and make sure whatever tool it needs lives nearby. A valve that has not moved in fifteen years may need a wrench or may not close fully — better to learn that today.

  2. Label the fixture stops

Under every sink and behind every toilet there is a small valve. Turning each one gently once or twice a year keeps them from seizing, which is the difference between isolating one fixture and shutting off the whole house.

  3. Know your building's arrangement

In condos and townhomes there is usually an in-unit valve, and sometimes only building staff can reach the riser valve. Knowing which applies to you determines who you call first.

Severity

How urgent is it, really?

Situation → how to treat it

SituationResponse
Burst or spraying supply lineImmediate: shut water, kill nearby power, contain. Everything else waits.
Sewage backing up into the homeImmediate: stop all water use in the property and keep people and pets out of the area.
Water heater leaking from the tank bodyUrgent: isolate water to the heater and shut off its power or gas supply.
Ceiling bulging or drippingUrgent: shut water, avoid standing underneath, and do not puncture without support in place.
Gas smell near a gas applianceLeave the property first and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside.
Toilet overflowingClose the angle stop behind it; stop plunging until the water level drops.
Single dripping faucetNot an emergency: close the stop if it worsens and schedule repair.
One slow drainNot an emergency: avoid chemical openers and address it when convenient.

After the water stops

Air movement matters more than mopping. Ventilate, run fans, and get moisture out of enclosed cabinets and wall cavities. In Miami's humidity, secondary damage develops quickly in materials that stay damp.

Questions

About plumbing emergencies

What actually counts as a plumbing emergency?

Water you cannot stop, water reaching electrical equipment or finished ceilings, sewage backing up into the living space, a gas smell near a water heater, or no water at all in an occupied home. Slow drains and drips are urgent-feeling but rarely emergencies in the same sense.

What is the first thing to do?

Stop the water at the nearest point that works: the fixture's own angle stop if the problem is at a fixture, otherwise the main valve for the property. Then open a low faucet to relieve the pressure still in the lines, which reduces how much keeps coming out at the failure point.

Should I turn off electricity too?

If water is near outlets, fixtures, or an electrical panel, switch off the affected circuits at the breaker before entering the area — from a dry position. If reaching the panel means walking through standing water, do not; wait for someone equipped to do it safely.

Does this site offer 24-hour dispatch?

For an active emergency, calling (954) 708-6930 is fastest; the assistant can also schedule a visit once the water is under control. If the property is actively flooding, shut the water off first — this page describes the sequence that limits damage while you arrange help.

Working out what your plumbing problem actually is?

Note what you can observe — where the water shows up, when it started, and what you already tried, then call. The assistant can also check open times and schedule a visit once you confirm the details.
