Does housing age really change the plumbing problems?
Substantially. Homes from the 1950s and 60s often have original galvanised or cast-iron sections that narrow internally. Condo stock from the 1970s and 80s brings shared risers and early plastic supply materials. Homes built in the last two decades tend to fail at fittings, connectors, and appliances rather than in the pipe runs themselves.
Are coastal properties different?
Salt air accelerates corrosion on exposed metal — hose bibbs, exterior valves, water heater enclosures, and connectors in unconditioned spaces. It does not change what is inside a wall much, but it does shorten the life of anything exposed outdoors.
Do condo buildings restrict plumbing work?
Very often. Many associations set work hours, require notice before a riser is shut down, and have rules about which valves a unit owner may operate. Checking those rules before scheduling anything avoids a wasted visit.
